The Episcopal CHurch

To find out more about The Episcopal Church in the USA click here

The Episcopal Church, established shortly after the American Revolution, has its roots in the Anglican Church. The Anglican Church, known as the Church of England, had a strong following in colonial America. But when the colonies won their independence, the majority of America’s Anglican clergy refused to swear allegiance to the British monarch as was required. As a result, the Episcopal Church was formed.

For more information, please visit Who We Are

There are  111 dioceses in the Episcopal Church, which has a membership of about 2 million people in the United States and 17 other countries. As part of the Anglican Communion, we join with some 70 million people around the world who trace their lineage to the Church of England.

What we believe

We Episcopalians believe in a loving, liberating, and life-giving God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. As constituent members of the Anglican Communion in the United States, we are descendants of and partners with the Church of England and the Scottish Episcopal Church, and are part of the third largest group of Christians in the world.
We believe in following the teachings of Jesus Christ, whose life, death, and resurrection saved the world.
We have a legacy of inclusion, aspiring to tell and exemplify God’s love for every human being; women and men serve as bishops, priests, and deacons in our church. Laypeople and clergy cooperate as leaders at all levels of our church. Leadership is a gift from God, and can be expressed by all people in our church, regardless of sexual identity or orientation.
We believe that God loves you – no exceptions.

The Episcopal Diocese of Kansas

The Episcopal Diocese of Kansas includes more than 8,500 members in 44 congregations, as well as two social service agencies.
The diocese covers the eastern 40 percent of the state of Kansas, extending as far west as Abilene and Wichita. It also includes the cities of Topeka, Lawrence, Manhattan and the entire Kansas City metropolitan area on the Kansas side of the state line.

A list of all congregations of the Diocese, and a map of their locations, is HERE.

A diocese is the geographic area overseen by a bishop.

The word "episcopal" comes from the Greek word for bishop, meaning an overseer.

Our Bishop is Bishop Cathleen Chittenden Bascom, who was ordained and consecrated as the 10th bishop of the diocese on Saturday, March 2, 2019, at Grace Cathedral, Topeka.
